Lenten Talents

The parable of talents in the Bible is something all Christians and anyone who has read the Bible would be familiar with.

A story of a Master who goes on a journey and gives his three servants talents (which is currency). One servant he gives 5 talents and another 2 and the last he gives 1. On his return he is extremely pleased with the servants who he had given 5 and 2 talents as they multiplied it. The one with 1 talent buried it and was despised by the Master, and cast into darkness

Look at it the other way, the one with the least talents buried or sowed his talents in someone else. Why is this parable seen with a capitalistic perspective? Your talents (real talents or money) is it only for multiplying and not sowing it in someone's life with no expectation of return or gains on it. Christ did it, to the extent he gave up his life for us. If he multiplied anything it was 2 fish and 5 loaves and that too to feed a hungry multitude.

This Season of Lent, can we have a paradigm shift from conventional ritualistic man made religious rules. Don't fast but feed. Indulge in entertainment that is joy to someone else. Don't fool yourself into believing this is a Holy period, as every day is Holy. Let it not be a period of abstinence but a period of auditing your life. How have you spent your life? Was it only acquisition of knowledge and wealth and sharing it, or was it to multiply?

Hindi movie music Industry was once the stronghold of Goan Catholics? What happened after to those talents? These were talents were groomed by the Church. Why is the Church not helping the youth to build talents? How many parishes and laity help with free coaching for the community for Civil exams or other competitive exams or for entrepreneurship? Like the Muslim Bhora or Khoja community which helps its followers to set up businesses, why are we not helping the entrepreneurial talents?

Man cannot be live on bread alone but from every word that comes from the mouth of God. All words of God has been to reach out and help. Then we are only interested in the bread and every pray give us today our daily bread and forgetting that we need to share it too.

Even Jesus said to a rich man on asked how he can be saved. Jesus told him sell all your possessions and distribute it amongst the poor and follow him. What he meant is your richness of talents share it with the ones who cannot afford to learn it. Don't teach them only to pray for their daily, but teach them how to make bread from your talents.

This season of Lent ask yourself what have your Lent to anyone and whom have you Lent it too. Was it with expectations of multiplying or to reach out and touch somebody's life? Remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return and don’t let it return with your talents to dust. Let your talents be multiplied in the lives of others. So don’t just give your Lenten alms this Lent, start giving your Lenten talents too.
