United States of Arseholes (Part V)

American economy runs on warfare is no brainer. All the wars in recent history has an American connection directly or indirectly. If American intervention that leads to wars are for ‘genuine’ reasons of Human rights then it looks like human beings only exist where there is oil. Human rights abuse is rampant and endemic in all third world and developing countries. So with India soon going to be recognized as the rape capital of the world, will America wage a war with India to protect women. Workers are being abused in China and Bangladesh, so will US wage a war with these countries? On the contrary workers abuse is happening in factories where American products are manufactured in these countries. Where is the American conscience or policing in these parts of the world?  It is ‘oil rights’ for America and less to do with Human rights.

America cannot police its streets where gun related killings is a normal affair. A gun related violence not happening in America is abnormal. America wants to clear Syria of its chemical arsenal but cannot clear its streets of guns. America has a problem with Iran building its nuclear capabilities but has no issues with Israel having them. America claims war on terror Organizations but had armed Al Qaeda in the past for its war against Russia, and now arming terrorists for its war against Assad regime in Syria.  Arming Pakistan which is known to be the cradle of terrorism. American Intelligence is now proving lack of it in all its policies. With its financial meltdown to housing crisis to all its policies. Not a single policy has benefitted America or Americans or the world at large. On the contrary it has only hurt American interests and Americans the hardest. What has happened to the Obama’s health bill promise when he was elected President?

US Recently banned Ranbaxy an Indian company for the presence of a suspected human hair in a tablet manufactured at a Ranbaxy Laboratory in India. Definitely a commendable move which is appreciated and should be emulated by the world for quality standards. How come the same standards not applied for ‘lack of safety of human life’ for the people who died in Bangladesh manufacturing apparel for American brand names? Which of these brands have been banned? How come these double standards of American policies? Human hair in medication as mentioned is definitely deplorable but how come the chemicals pumped into American beverages and its food industry and nicotine in cigarettes is not worrying? Is it poison the food but ensure medication for the poisoning should be clean. Is it some kind of collaborative business cycle model where the food and tobacco industry poisons and the Pharmaceutical Industry keeps the medication manufacturing going? Poisoning with GM foods is another example of America’s warped policies.

Can understand Americans lacking intelligence but even common sense! Recent win of an Indian origin girl Ms. Nina Davuluri was met with the most demeaning and disgusting of racist remarks where she was even confused to be an Arab origin. Forget world geography, average Americans don’t even their own geography. A National Geographic/Roper Poll conducted in 2006 found that half the 18–24-year-old Americans surveyed could not locate New York on a map of the United States, and nearly 6 in 10 could not locate Ohio. An average American is anyway confused to what race America can be compared with, where even Obama when he campaigned for presidency was subjected to racism. Issues of his birth to his religion were brought in.

First black American Vanessa Williams, too was subjected to racism and even death threats, after her winning the title Ms. America. So much was the hatred that any material that could be scavenged, was sought to nail her and finally private pictures of her taken in the nude was used against her forcing her to resign. Strange a Ms. America had to resign for her nude pictures published without her knowledge, but a President can continue in his presidency after subjecting an intern to oral sex, has to be a country of Arseholes.

Dear Mr. Murthy (Part II),

My last blog mail to you was on October 27, 2010.

Now with you coming back to Infosys and trying to work your personal branding magic is nothing but to get your son to head the empire one day. Just that you were too fast in driving your plans and instead of one day you are wanting him to take over yesterday. He only being an assistant to you to help you perform better, to now planning to squeeze him to a Management level citing protocol reasons for his performing in your offices, is nothing but a hogwash.

Absolutely no harm in whatever you are doing, my only request is switch off the halo you carry around projecting an image of corporate ethics and fairness. You have a problem when a performing star employee like Ashok Vemuri wanted to be the CEO. You felt his probability of his becoming the CEO at Infosys was at best 33% and at least 18 to 20 months away. Surprising this same probability is not used for your son. You shower praises of Ratan Tata and his legacy and his ability to steer growth, and achieving it legally and ethically and claiming his legacy are lessons enough for ages and lessons enough for business people all over the world. Surprising you couldn’t learn anything from those lessons.

Coming back to Infosys is primarily a greed for power and growth of the Organization secondary. Mohandas Pai, former CFO and HR Head of Infosys, who was a key part of the founding team that piloted the company during its growth phase, rightly said with Murthy, there is only one boss at Infosys. Looks like if there would be a boss after you it has to be your son. There is no doubt and very strong possibility that you may drive Infosys to the age old glory. The only question you need to ask yourself is will you be seen in the same glory? The fakery of how you used to project on living in a humble abode and taking the company bus to work at times, is what even our politicians do. Come election time they also go and eat in a poor man’s house, take a public transport and do many other stuff to fool the masses.

You spoke of tough decisions that needed to be taken, and it looks like the first tough decision which was the easiest was to get your son on-board. As I mentioned earlier there is absolutely no harm in what you are doing, and is a natural parental instinct. Just don’t confuse yourself or fool investors with parental instincts. As long as Infosys makes money it is fine, and investors would be happy. Organizations can fail but leaders don’t. They lead with example of fairness, and not selfishness. Ratan Tata once rightly explained the difference between Reliance and Tata’s, where he said Reliance is a business Organization and Tata’s are nation builders. So better project yourself as a business Organization and you a business man, which is fine. Displaying it with virtues and not able to display it, shows poor levels of character.

Creation of hundreds of dollar millionaires and thousands of rupee millionaires. drivers, office assistants and secretaries getting shares along with others and becoming millionaires, was great motivating stories of Indian entrepreneurship you pioneered. Today it is news of Infosys sacking employees. Then your hogging the lime light by throwing a peanut of 8% salary hike after retaking over. It would have been nice if you had also disclosed when was the last hike in Infosys given prior to this? You think employees are fools to be conned with promotion letters and no increment letters. Trying to call back old Infosys leadership who left, how many have bitten the bait Mr. Murthy? You forget Mr. Murthy that employees don’t leave bad companies, they leave bad Management.

All that you are now trying to manage is maybe the growth path of Infosys but definitely a growth path for your son.

Regards,
Sunny Fernandes
