Dear Mr. Murthy (Part II),

My last blog mail to you was on October 27, 2010.

Now with you coming back to Infosys and trying to work your personal branding magic is nothing but to get your son to head the empire one day. Just that you were too fast in driving your plans and instead of one day you are wanting him to take over yesterday. He only being an assistant to you to help you perform better, to now planning to squeeze him to a Management level citing protocol reasons for his performing in your offices, is nothing but a hogwash.

Absolutely no harm in whatever you are doing, my only request is switch off the halo you carry around projecting an image of corporate ethics and fairness. You have a problem when a performing star employee like Ashok Vemuri wanted to be the CEO. You felt his probability of his becoming the CEO at Infosys was at best 33% and at least 18 to 20 months away. Surprising this same probability is not used for your son. You shower praises of Ratan Tata and his legacy and his ability to steer growth, and achieving it legally and ethically and claiming his legacy are lessons enough for ages and lessons enough for business people all over the world. Surprising you couldn’t learn anything from those lessons.

Coming back to Infosys is primarily a greed for power and growth of the Organization secondary. Mohandas Pai, former CFO and HR Head of Infosys, who was a key part of the founding team that piloted the company during its growth phase, rightly said with Murthy, there is only one boss at Infosys. Looks like if there would be a boss after you it has to be your son. There is no doubt and very strong possibility that you may drive Infosys to the age old glory. The only question you need to ask yourself is will you be seen in the same glory? The fakery of how you used to project on living in a humble abode and taking the company bus to work at times, is what even our politicians do. Come election time they also go and eat in a poor man’s house, take a public transport and do many other stuff to fool the masses.

You spoke of tough decisions that needed to be taken, and it looks like the first tough decision which was the easiest was to get your son on-board. As I mentioned earlier there is absolutely no harm in what you are doing, and is a natural parental instinct. Just don’t confuse yourself or fool investors with parental instincts. As long as Infosys makes money it is fine, and investors would be happy. Organizations can fail but leaders don’t. They lead with example of fairness, and not selfishness. Ratan Tata once rightly explained the difference between Reliance and Tata’s, where he said Reliance is a business Organization and Tata’s are nation builders. So better project yourself as a business Organization and you a business man, which is fine. Displaying it with virtues and not able to display it, shows poor levels of character.

Creation of hundreds of dollar millionaires and thousands of rupee millionaires. drivers, office assistants and secretaries getting shares along with others and becoming millionaires, was great motivating stories of Indian entrepreneurship you pioneered. Today it is news of Infosys sacking employees. Then your hogging the lime light by throwing a peanut of 8% salary hike after retaking over. It would have been nice if you had also disclosed when was the last hike in Infosys given prior to this? You think employees are fools to be conned with promotion letters and no increment letters. Trying to call back old Infosys leadership who left, how many have bitten the bait Mr. Murthy? You forget Mr. Murthy that employees don’t leave bad companies, they leave bad Management.

All that you are now trying to manage is maybe the growth path of Infosys but definitely a growth path for your son.

Regards,
Sunny Fernandes

point well made sir

As you rightly mentioned in the blog, infosys is a business and business is run by business men to make profit. They may employ many methods suitable to circumstances to achieve this goal. I do not know whether any where at any time Mr. Narayana Murthy has tried to project himself as a saint or claimed that infosys is a charitable organisation. It is true that he and his wife are involved in many charity work and people and media have given them aura of saints. He might have tried many business models to run the company successfully, such as giving employees a feeling of ownership by encouraging them to have company shares etc. Times have changed and he is trying other solutions to improve the stake of the company.

It is very common to go after the image of successful people. It is always advisable to closely watch and scrutinize them. You may find many flaws as we are all human. Oppose if you find anything harming the society. Neglect other flaws and if you find any thing worth following, try to emulate it.
regards

Hi Sunny,

Excellent views. This Murthy is a very opportunistic person became successful because he was in right place at right time. He left Infy considering the chance of becoming Vice president or President since the elections happened last year. Now he is back to grab power and also make his son the king. How can a person with less than 5 years of experience become VP, unless he is the son of NRN. He criticises the whole world and questions dynasty etc. He told we do not consider such people when Satyam saga happened.

What is your problem mr.intellectual poser?

You agree that NRM can bring back the glory of infosys but you want him to be a holy cow/ mr.perfect, right?...This is the problem with you kind of hypocrites..fundamentally you have a typical indian middle class attitude problem: it is impossible for anyone to do some action without selfish/monetary motive...you people would like to imagine that everyone is an asshole and if not so you'll create reasons to justify so...

ok..what's wrong if NRM brings his son into the company?? afterall infosys is his baby..he's great enough to not to run it as a family venture...he could have planned and done that if he would have wished..instead he has given away that to other hands..Can you idiot give away atleast part of what you have earned so far?... before calling NRM as a faker think about what a faker/poser you are...

Mubi says
Nicely said and made it clear that no matter what happen some people do take it negative but in the end reality is infosys his baby that makes him official in-charge to do what is required to be done under his umbrella
