Vishwaroopam

Another movie in India getting dragged into a created controversy, and amongst the many, one of the most idiotic and stupidest reasons is that it could create social disharmony. If that is the case then all movies bashing Pakistan, its secret services, etc, should be banned as that could be the reason we are having so much turmoil on our borders and our soldiers heads decapitated could be the reason for this.

Dumbest idea is the moment a cigarette lighting scene is shown a notice get displayed that ‘Cigarette smoking is injurious to health’. Then it should apply for everything, for e.g. if there is a sex scene a notice should be displayed ‘Unprotected sex can cause STD and AIDS’. If there is a gun fight scene a notice should be displayed ‘Guns can kill’. Notices should be for stunts that show heroes flying, villains flung, drinking alcohol, etcetera, and etcetera. No doubt it would be confusing whether we going to be entertained or going to get educated?

If movies are targeted for social disharmony, then the question is has motivational movies done any good? Good no. of movies have been made on Gandhi, so how many politicians have stripped their attire and walked into parliament with a loin cloth? How many have stopped taking security and walk around with a stick in their hands? Movies have been made on saints like Saibaba, Sant Tukaram, and many more, so how many have turned religious watching these movies? When will our government, politicians and law makers realize that movies are for entertainment and do not contribute to social change of destruction or nation building. If that was so then our nation by now should have been the most developed nation in the world as we are largest movie producing nation in the world. The way things are going it won’t be long that diktats would be issued not to show politicians, police and lawyers as corrupt and dishonest, as that is a reason there are scams in the country.

Mystery is for a movie like Vishwaroopam legal approvals and disapprovals are done if not in hours at least within days, then how come someone like Afzal Guru is still enjoying hospitality in our prisons and not yet hung? Why did it take so long for a Kasab to be hung? Flip side is how come innocents languish in jails and cases are dragged for years together? We hear there are shortages of lawyers then where do the lawyers appear for banning a movie? No producer or director puts a gun on the population and demands them to watch movies, so are we to understand that if the law does not intervene, people will go watch movies and get influenced. If that is so then the law should intervene for movies that flop and ensure the producers get their money and demand everyone to go and watch their movies.

How come no law is there to ensure politicians who have cases on them and proven with criminal record not allowed to contest elections, but movies can be alleged to be bad influence and banned. Why can’t the people decide what is good and bad for them? If the population can decide who to vote and bring to power, they are definitely sensible which movie to watch or not to watch. Self conferred religious authorities can decide to what attire their women should wear, decide their women should not carry mobiles, etc, so why can’t they not just tell their community not to watch a movie that they feel is insulting to their religion. Why ban or obstruct theatres from showing a censor board cleared movie and not allow other communities to watch it? So next would be stop other religions from practicing their faith as it does not agree to their faith and belief of their religion being superior and the only religion that can be practiced?

Then playing and singing the national anthem should be also be banned as there are some religious bodies that have an objection to that. So next time I go to watch a movie and the national anthem is played, I wish it comes with a notice that reads, ‘Singing the national anthem cannot assure national harmony’.
