Put Ganesh on Par with Jesus?
This was the title question of a petition, by an alleged Catholic Association, who were against Catholic clergy encouraging respect to an Indian God, Lord Ganesh

They wanted the Catholic Community to sign the petition and gave various scripture references from the Bible to prove their point. At the same time are they completely ok with the large nos. of non Catholics who visit various Catholic Churches to pray and offer reverence and even offer large sums of money as donation? Is it as long as it fills coffers anyone is welcome. At the same time any Catholic who pays respect to an Indian God is bad in the eyes of their Foreign God!
Many Catholics don't even know their history of how and why their ancestors were converted into Catholicism? Most of them would be baptism by the swords like the Crusades or fooling the poor with food rations. Guess that is where the Catholic Church got branded in the recent past as rice bags.
Christianity which prevailed in Kerala much before the Portuguese colonists arrived, their Bibles were burnt by the Portuguese because it did not align with their Roman Catholic Church teachings and their allegiance to Rome and their leader, the Pope. These colonists came for the spices mainly pepper to flavor their bland food and ended up evangelizing and giving the body of Christ as spiritual food. Goan Inquisition is a clear bloody history of conversion and land occupation. If Catholics read of the Inquisition and involvement of the alleged Saint Francis Xavier, many may seriously think of a Ghar Wapsi to their religious roots of their ancestors. Still cannot understand how can the Catholic Church make a Saint out of person who ordered persecution of Indians during colonisation

The petition even compares Lord Ganesh made of clay! What are the idols of God and Saints in all Catholic Churches made off? Gold? Silver? Platinum? Then again Jesus made to look like a white man to show white supremacy. Biblical texts quoted against Idol Worship! Then why are there idols in all Catholic Churches? So Hindu Idol is not God and only Catholic Churches Idols are God's and Saints? With some saints even having days to be prayed too? Maybe they work only one day and the rest of the days are days of Sabath? Many Catholics don't even know of Indian origin saints and none of the Indian Saints are prayed too or even have Churches built on their name. Time we have a Swadeshi Movement (Indigenous Indian movement) with Indian culture and ideally without an umbilical cord to Rome.
About not accepting sweets or other food (called Prasad) blessed by these temples by being placed on the feet of these Hindu God's? Some Hindu restaurants even serve food after a ritual of first offering to their God as respect and then serving customers. So a Catholic should not eat in these restaurants and see some Catholic Halal Restaurant or wait for Manna to rain from the heavens?
When will Indian Catholic Church and some self styled leaders or preachers stop spewing venom about other religions and their beliefs. Especially in the current situation in India which is getting religiously divisive and hate speech on the rise. Because of these few such individuals, innoncent Catholics could be a victim of sectarian violence or hate.
So I refuse to sign this petition in support of this divisive and dangerous religious message, but will make a sign of the cross and say a prayer urging God, "Forgive them Father for they don't know what they doing."

Am a Catholic who respects all religions. There's a lot of info to digest and some of it is rather unpalatable. If you hit out at the Catholic Church you have to understand that it is an institution made up of people and people err. Also disturbing are portions of antiCatholic rhetoric. I take it you know of the case where a pastor bravely sang a hymn while his family was murdered one by one in front of him while he was being taunted. Horrifying don't you think? To encourage tolerance it is essential to not hit out at any faith but rather to find common ground and promote respect. Peace.
